The police will recover the data erased from the mobiles of the main accused
Rural Coimbatore Police will examine two smartphones seized from the leader of the four-member gang, who allegedly blackmailed and harassed a student after forcibly shooting his video in a car, at a government lab in Chennai to recover the erased data.
The mobile phones were seized from K. Thirunavukkarasu (27) of Gandhi Nagar of Makkinampatti near Pollachi and the main accused in the case, when he was arrested on Tuesday. He was detained around 11 a.m. on his way from Pollachi to his home.
“Thirunavukkarasu had deleted all data from the two smart phones recovered from him. Therefore, we decided to send them to the government laboratory in Egmore to recover the erased data, ”said a police officer.
Police said Thirunavukkarasu, a money-lender, fled as they managed to arrest three other gang members – N. Sabarirajan (25) from Bishop Nagar, N. Sathish (29) from Suleeswaranpatti, T. Vasanthakumar from Pakkothipalayam, February 25. Police had found more than 25 obscene videos and photos of more than 50 girls and women – allegedly harassed and blackmailed by the gang – on Sabarirajan, Sathish and Vasanthakumar’s cell phones. With Thirunavukkarasu as the gang leader, police suspect similar content may have been on his cell phones which he deleted. Police suspect the gang blackmailed and deceived several women and students into taking their videos in compromising positions.
Pollachi East Police had registered a complaint against the four defendants under Sections 354 (A), 354 (B) of the IPC read with 66 (E) of the Computer Act and 4 of the Prohibition Act. harassment of Tamil Nadu women based on complaint filed by 19-year-old girl, video of which the gang forcibly took a car belonging to Thirunavukkarasu to Unjavelampatti on February 12. The gang then allegedly blackmailed the girl for money and sexual favors. Police also arrested “Bar” Nagaraj (27), Senthil (33), Babu (26) and Vasanthakumar (20), all from Pollachi, for allegedly threatening and assaulting the girl’s brother and members of his family.
