MANILA, Philippines – Vice President’s spokesperson Leni Robredo on Wednesday refuted former Senator Antonio Trillanes’ claim that she was preparing for a gubernatorial race in Camarines Sur, adding that she was still open to the presidency in the 2022 polls.
“There is absolutely no truth to the claim that she is preparing to run for the governorship of Camarines Sur,” Robredo spokesman Barry Gutierrez said, noting that the vice president is focusing still on aid to Filipinos amid the pandemic.
“Now is not the time to play politics, but to work for the well-being of the people,” continued Gutierrez.
Trillanes claimed earlier Wednesday that Robredo was preparing to run for governor of Camarines Sur.
As a result, he and the Magdalo group decided that he would run for the nomination of the 1Sambayan opposition coalition as their presidential candidate instead of being an alternative to Robredo.
The opposition is working to present a single list for the 2022 polls to challenge the administration’s bets through the broad left-to-right coalition 1Sambayan.
Trillanes has said he is not dividing the opposition and is ready to give way to Robredo if she decides to run for president.
“But until then we would work on the assumption that VP Leni would run for CamSur governor and, thus, we could now begin our own preparations by focusing on developing policy prescriptions to address the various problems of CamSur. our country, ”Trillanes said.
Shortly afterwards, the Liberal Party’s internal vice-president, Teddy Baguilat, said in a tweet that Robredo was still interested in running for president.
“[Senator Trillanes’] The statement was misinterpreted or was expressed in a wrong way, ”Baguilat said.
When a netizen pointed out that Trillanes’ statement about Robredo’s alleged preparations for his run for governor was clear, Baguilat said Liberal Party and Magdalo leaders would meet on the matter.
