In Between At The Border is a tour of a few islands near the border of Tijuana culminating in a discussion hangout on a large median on the road exiting Tijuana. The tour begins at the archway in downtown Tijuana at Revolucion and Art. 123 Fuente Mexico after a performance by Nancy Popp (arrive at 1:30 to see her performance).

Performing Public Space-bodily actions and artworks that interrupt the conventional structuring of public space, curated by Janet Owen-Driggs and Matthew Driggs. Artists in the show include Lauren Bon, Fallen Fruit, Finishing School, John Geary, Anne Hars & Bill Wheelock, Islands of LA, Paul Pescador, Nancy Popp, Jules Rochielle Sievert, Jane Tsong, L.A. Urban Rangers

“Bringing the work of eleven LA-based artists and artist collectives to La Casa del Túnel, Tijuana, Performing Public Space presents new performances and artworks alongside growing archives of ‘non-art’ actions documented on the streets, parks and plazas of Los Angeles and Tijuana.” (from PPS website). For more information on the exhibition and other events.

The show is located at La Casa de Tunel, which is the site of a former tunnel to cross the border.  La Casa de Tunel “is now a place for culture, community and the environment. The Center will feature gallery space for art exhibitions and projects, office, art materials store, and presentation space for music and spoken word.”

As part of the show, there will be a discussion and tour of traffic islands in Tijuana. In a conversation between Ari Kletzky, Islands of LA founder, and Luis Itarte, director of La Casa de Tunel, about public space and traffic islands in Tijuana, it seems that these use of these spaces could attract police attention. While touring the area, we came across an island near the border, along the route to exit Tijuana. Due to the location of this island, Luis believed that it is highly unlikely the police would bother people using this island. On March 13, after Nancy Popp performs her climb, we will walk ~ 1 mile to this site visiting some other islands along the way and sharing some island stories, concluding the tour by hanging out on this island to enjoy fruit from a local vendor and for a discussion about public space and the precarity of borders and safety.
