Meeting with Public Works and Dept of Cultural Affairs
On Wed, July 9th, there was a meeting with the city to discuss the LOVE APPLES project, a collaboration of Fallen Fruit and Islands of LA. In attendance were representatives from Public Works as well as the Department of Cultural Affairs. We discussed the project, their concerns about safety and the city’s general view of traffic islands. The city highlighted a concern about “attractive nuisance” and 3 major items when determining what is safe use of a traffic island:
- Size and clearance from traffic
- Design speed of roadway
- Traffic considerations if there are fixed elements such as a statue (what happens if a car were to hit it)
After the meeting, the city said we could pick up the 18 plants they had removed. We asked if there was somewhere in the city they could be replanted and they authorized a replanting on a traffic island in El Sereno.
On Wednesday, July 16th, exactly 1 week after the meeting, we met with a couple of city gardeners to replant all 18 plants. We would like to thank the city for its understanding and support and for joining us to replant the Love Apples.
