On a traffic island in Westerly, RI, in March, 2008, the Raging Grannies staged a protest against the war in Iraq. According to the Grrrrannies of Grrreater Westerly, “The first Raging Grannies errr … sprouted … in 1986 in Victoria, BC, to sing satirical songs protesting nukes, militarism, racism, clear-cut logging, and corporate greed. This island is one of several medians, as well as a few tiny triangular islands at the intersection of Washington and S Grand Vista. This island is a narrow median that gets extremely narrow in the middle. It is not a place for assembly, but at the end of the median is a lookout point.
This island is across the street from a recycling center. It is also the only traffic island visited thus far with an illegal dumping sign.
