We began by adding regular dirt to the island, which was filled about a year ago with soil for vegetables. Natives prefer native dirt. Caroline and her 3 kids joined in the dirt movement and planting:

Before we arrived the boys in the neighborhood were at Side Street Projects. They had worked the soil, preparing it for planting seeds. Diana Lind, editor of Next American City, was in town for a week of events for the magazine and was able to join in the activity.

Love Apples on Island at Side Street
Today, after planting Love Apples in Glassell Park with local residents, we joined a group at Side Street Projects to plant on a faux traffic island installation called I Was Here. We were joined by Jon and Emily from Side Street and a group of kids.
